Hub City cattle auction report

The Hub City Livestock Auction, Aberdeen, South Dakota, reported receipts of 7,450 head on May 2, compared to 6,688 head last week and 6,444 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to the previous week, the steers weighing 650 to 850 pounds were mostly steady with instances up to $3 higher, those 851 to 1,000 pounds were selling $3 to $5 lower, those 1,001 to 1,050 pounds were mostly steady and those 1,051 to 1,100 pounds were mostly selling $2 lower. The heifers from 650 to 700 pounds were selling $3 to $4 lower, thsoe 701 to 850 pounds were mostly steady and other weight classes of heifers were not well compared. There was good demand for this large offering featuring many packages, loads and strings of both back grounded and home raised steers and heifers, including quite a few packages of weaned fall calves. The flesh condition was varied and mostly moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. The quality was average to attractive on the offering. Steers made up 54% of the feeder supply and heifers were 46% with 94% weighing over 600 pounds.
