Manhattanite sweeps poetry contests

For the fourth time in the 14-year history of the Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest, the same person won both the serious and humorous divisions at the 2024 state championship. Betty Burlingham of Manhattan claimed first place in both categories.

The finals of the Kansas contest were June 7 at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan.

Placings were as follows:

Serious

1st: Betty Burlingham, Manhattan

2nd: John Marks, Gypsum

3rd: Eli Taylor, Wamego

Humorous

1st: Betty Burlingham, Manhattan

2nd: Dennis Russell, Gardner, Colorado

3rd: Hank Letourneau, Concordia

They were among 12 contestants who advanced to the finals by qualifying at the previous regional contests in Hays and Fredonia.
