Idaho ranks second in the United States for production of alfalfa hay, producing 8 percent of the nation’s crop. In 2016, according to the Idaho Department of Agriculture, the state harvested 1.3 million acres of hay, for a total production value of $673.6 million. Larsen Farms, Dubois, Idaho, is one of those many alfalfa producers, and the participants of the 2018 Cotton Foundation Multi-Commodity Education Program were treated to a tour of the Larsen Hay Terminal. The tour is an exchange trip to bring southern cotton growers to the north, and vice versa, so both groups can better understand the production and policy needs of unfamiliar regions of the country.
