Newell sheep sales report
The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, South Dakota, reported receipts of 1,768 head selling on July 26, compared to 636 head a week ago and 4,219 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, 80- to 90-pound were selling mostly steady. Other weights were not offered last week, but lower undertones were noted when compared to July 12 sale. Demand was just moderate for feeder lambs. Quality was very attractive, as was the flesh overall as most offerings were in a light-fleshed condition. Slaughter ewes were selling steady to $4 lower compared to a week ago. There was moderate demand for the ewes. Feeder lambs made up 91% of the offering; the balance was slaughter ewes.
Slaughter lambs: Wooled Choice and Prime 2 to 3, 40 head, 123 lbs., 129.00.
Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 181 to 186 lbs., 43.00 to 45.50 (43.63). Utility 1 to 2, 44 head, 161 lbs., 40.00. Cull 1, 7 head, 138 lbs., 32.00.
Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 55 to 56 lbs., 166.00 to 172.00 (167.55); 9 head, 62 lbs., 141.00 short docks; 73 to 78 lbs., 155.00 to 156.50 (155.81); 79 head, 77 lbs., 152.50 full; 82 to 87 lbs., 142.00 to 149.00 (144.56); 8 head, 86 lbs., 140.00 short docks; 91 to 96 lbs., 142.00 to 146.50 (144.91); 100 to 108 lbs., 135.00 to 138.00 (137.76); 17 head, 107 lbs., 122.00 Short Docks; 110 to 119 lbs., 133.00 to 134.00 (133.42).
