Crops turning rapidly in dry, warm conditions

Dry winds and warm temperatures were observed throughout the state for the week ending Aug. 12, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Mountain Regional Field Office, Montana. The high temperature for the state was recorded in Powderville at 109 degrees. The low temperature for the week was recorded in Yellowstone at 16 degrees. Precipitation was reported at 41 weather stations. The highest recorded precipitation for the week was in Jordan with 0.98 of an inch of moisture. Topsoil moisture conditions for the state were 37 percent adequate to surplus, above last year’s 2 percent. Subsoil moisture conditions were 44 percent adequate to surplus which is above last year’s 9 percent. Producers noted that crops and pasture grasses are turning rapidly in the dry, warm weather with non-irrigated pastures being very dry.
