Kansas State University animal science students compete in academic quadrathlon

The K-State animal sciences academic quadrathlon recently took place to determine who would represent K-State at the regional competition during the Midwest Society of Animal Science meetings in Omaha, Nebraska. A total of 15 teams competed. Members of the champion team were Joel Nelson, Soldier, Kansas; Shane Newton, Waverly, Kansas; Joel Martin, Bucklin, Missouri; and Will Patterson, Holton, Kansas.

Each team participated in four events: laboratory practicum, written exam, oral presentation and quiz bowl.

In the laboratory practicum, the team demonstrated ability to perform physical skills. The work at each station involved a species such as beef or swine or a disciplinary area such as physiology or meats.

The written exam questions covered any area related to animal production and products. Each team worked on one exam, dividing the questions as they chose.

In the oral presentation, the students chose from a list of topics related to animal agriculture and had two weeks to prepare a 10-14 minute presentation on the topic.

In the Quiz Bowl, questions were on any topic that related to animal agriculture.

On their way to earning overall champion honors, the team earned first in the quiz bowl and laboratory practicum and third place in the written exam and oral presentation.

These individuals will receive a $200 scholarship and custom belt buckles crafted by Max Lang Buckles, Houston, Texas. Sponsors of the K-State Academic Quadrathlon and the K-State team are Fourth & Pomeroy Associates, Clay Center, Kansas.
