Philip Livestock Auction report

The Philip Livestock Auction, Philip, South Dakota, reported receipts of 3,279 head selling on Feb. 27, compared to 3,317 head selling on Feb. 13 and 4,985 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There was no feeder cattle sale a week ago. Comparisons made to the Feb. 13 sale. Feeder steers under 750 pounds were selling mostly $4 to $6 lower, over 750 pounds were trading steady. Feeder heifers under 600 pounds were selling $6 higher, 600 to 650 pounds were selling $2 to $4 higher, 650 to 750 pounds were selling steady to $2 higher, 750 to 850 pounds were trading $1 to $3 lower. Very good demand for several long strings, load lots and many packages of feeder cattle and several strings of replacement heifers that all sold on an active market. Much of the supply carried light to moderate flesh with good weighing conditions. The per head sales denote replacement heifers that sold in conjunction with the production bull sale. The supply included 68% feeder cattle, balance was bred cows, a production bull sale and slaughter cows and bulls. The feeder cattle offering included 27% steers, 73% heifers, 91% over 600 pounds.
