For the week ending May 27, there were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, Kansas. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 17 percent very short, 31 short, 48 adequate, and 4 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 18 percent very short, 37 short, 44 adequate, and 1 surplus.
Winter wheat condition rated 15 percent very poor, 33 poor, 35 fair, 15 good, and 2 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 89 percent, behind 97 last year, and near 91 for the five-year average. Coloring was 15 percent, well behind 37 last year, and behind 22 average.
Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 35 fair, 49 good, and 8 excellent. Corn planted was 93 percent, ahead of 80 last year and 88 average. Emerged was 81 percent, ahead of 62 last year and 66 average.
Soybeans planted was 65 percent, well ahead of 39 last year and 37 average. Emerged was 42 percent, well ahead of 22 last year and 18 average.
Sorghum planted was 20 percent, ahead of 10 last year and 14 average.
Cotton planted was 62 percent, well ahead of 29 last year and 25 average.
Sunflowers planted was 16 percent, ahead of 4 last year and 6 average.
