Corn progressing ahead of average

For the week ending July 29, there were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 19 short, 73 adequate, and 5 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 7 percent very short, 22 short, 69 adequate, and 2 surplus.

Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 53 good, and 22 excellent. Corn silking was 92 percent, ahead of 75 both last year and for the five-year average. Dough was 34 percent, well ahead of 9 both last year and average. Dented was 2 percent.

Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 24 fair, 54 good, and 15 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 82 percent, ahead of 77 last year, and near 80 average. Setting pods was 50 percent, ahead of 38 last year and 40 average.

Winter wheat harvested was 79 percent, near 81 last year, but well ahead of 57 average.

Spring wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 38 fair, 48 good, and 4 excellent. Spring wheat harvested was 35 percent, behind 43 last year, but ahead of 21 average.

Oats condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 24 fair, 68 good, and 6 excellent. Oats harvested was 54 percent, ahead of 49 last year and 44 average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 21 fair, 77 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum headed was 41 percent, ahead of 31 last year, but behind 48 average.
