Read Psalm 34:1-8
Happy are those who take refuge in [the Lord].—Psalm 34:8 (NRSV)
Many years ago, after a walk in the park, my children and I were heading home. Unexpectedly, my younger daughter tore her hand from mine and ran out into the street directly into the path of a car. In a moment, I felt like my whole life was broken. I closed my eyes and asked God, “Why?” I dreaded the thought of looking underneath that car.
When I did, I thanked God that it was not as bad as I had feared. My daughter had fallen between the wheels, and the driver had been driving slowly. To my surprise, the driver came to the hospital the next day to say he was sorry despite the fact that it was not his fault.
To this day, I give thanks to God for protecting my child. Reading the Bible regularly has shown me that we can seek God not only when we face difficulties and fear but in every situation, good or bad. God’s word in scripture gives me comfort and hope for my life’s journey.
Prayer—Thank you, God, for your caring love every day, not only in the most terrifying moments of our lives but in joyful times as well. Help us to trust you and to have thankful hearts. Amen.
Thought for the Day—Whether I am fearful or joyful, God is with me.
