High Plains sorghum and wheat producers seek reliable information and insight as they plan for 2025 crops, and an upcoming event should be beneficial.
High Plains Journal’s annual Sorghum U Wheat U is set for 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Doubletree by Hilton Wichita Airport, 2098 Airport Road.
This year’s event includes a farmer panel, market outlook by Matt Hines of Loewen & Associates, breakout presentations, networking opportunities and industry updates. Also certified crop adviser continuing education units are available.
Following registration at 8 a.m. and a welcome by HPJ Publisher Zac Stuckey at 8:45 a.m., a producer panel will start the day at 9 a.m. Moderator Matt Durler with National Sorghum Producers will take the lead as panelists Chris Tanner, Zack Rendel and Keef Felty will share insight on what is happening in their operations and challenges they see moving forward.
At 10:30 a.m., two breakout session are planned. Changes in Wheat Seed Technology will be led by Dalton Henry of U.S. Wheat Associates, and Managing Sorghum Fertility to Maximize Profitability will be presented by Brian Arnall of Oklahoma State University.
During lunch at 11:30 a.m., updates from Kansas Wheat and Kansas Sorghum will be shared with attendees, and Hines will offer his insight on sorghum and wheat markets.
Two more breakout sessions are planned after lunch. At 1:30 p.m., Disease Management in Wheat will be presented by Kelsey Onefre of Kansas State University, and Climate Smart Sustainability in Sorghum will be presented by Durler.
At 2:30 p.m., Beyond Grain: Benefits of Wheat in Cropping Systems will be presented by Romulo Lollato of K-State, and Emerging Markets in Sorghum will be presented by John Duff of Sero Ag Strategies on behalf of National Sorghum Producers.
