Dinner gatherings and reports top of mind

At the cafe the other day, one cowboy had ordered the same thing for dinner as the other ol’ cowboy. We were giving the waitress a hard time after the waitress brought the food out to the first cowboy.

Rob said to the waitress, “Are you sure that wasn’t my food?” Then I hollered, “No, Rob, I think the cook has a crush on the other ol’ cowboy.” So, before Rob got his food, I walked up to the cook and said, “Rob still wants to tip the waitress, but since it has taken this long he wanted to tip less. But after waiting this long he can’t remember which one was his waitress.”

The cook likes to have fun, too, so she told me to tell Rob to bring Lunchables next time.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is announcing the resumption of cattle and bison imports from Mexico. As of Feb. 1, the report said it was scheduled to resume within the next several days.

A bird flu outbreak in U.S. dairy cows has grown to affect more than two dozen herds in eight states, just weeks after the nation’s largest egg producer found the virus in its chickens. Health officials stress that the risk to the public is low and that the U.S. food supply remains safe and stable. However, Tuesday morning, with the futures down on both feeder and live cattle, I’m wondering if there are more bird flu concerns or just funds or others concerned about tariff effects or other world problems.

A few of us so-called cattlemen were talking about the cattle market and the futures. One said, “My broker said it’s a good day to get out of short positions.” Another said, “Sometimes if you are short on the futures plus have the cattle, it is a good time to lose your shorts.” I can tell you today, with the weather like it is, it is not a good day to lose your shorts.

The late basketball player Kobe Bryant once said, “I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses.”

Only a woman who has delivered a baby without an epidural can truly understand the pain a man goes through when he has a cold.

Don’t let success go to your head or failure to your heart.
