Newell Sheep sales report
The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,706 head selling on Jan. 25, compared to 853 head selling on Jan. 11 and 331 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Newell sheep sale was not reported last week due to light receipts, comparisons made to the Jan. 11 sale. Feeder lambs 80 to 100 pounds were selling $30 higher, 100 to 120 pounds were selling $20 to $25 higher, over 120 pounds were selling $5 higher. Good slaughter ewes were selling $4 to $5 higher, utility and cull slaughter ewes were selling $5 to $6 lower, fat bucks were selling steady. Very good demand for several long strings and packages that sold on a very strong, active market. The offering consisted of 86% feeder lambs, 1% replacement ewes, 13% slaughter ewes and bucks.
Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, fleshy, 126 head, 175 lbs., 68.00. Good 3 to 4, fleshy, 30 head, 218 lbs., 56.00. Utility 1 to 2, medium, 55 head, 149 lbs., 69.00. Cull 1, thin, 14 head, 144 lbs., 57.00.
Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1, 108 head, 111 lbs., 191.50. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 93 head, 65 lbs., 230.00; 72 to 75 lbs., 221.00 to 228.00 (225.36); 80 to 89 lbs., 208.00 to 223.00 (217.61); 91 to 97 lbs., 204.00 to 221.00 (212.61); 101 to 109 lbs., 175.00 to 190.00 (189.29); 111 to 119 lbs., 166.00 to 189.00 (179.19); 122 to 128 lbs., 157.00; 134 to 139 lbs., 134.00 to 141.00 (138.40). Medium and large frame 2, 8 head, 53 lbs., 195.00.
Slaughter bucks: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 31 head, 223 lbs., 70.00; 14 head, 310 lbs., 66.00; 3 head, 207 lbs., 42.50.
