Pratt Livestock auction report

The Pratt Livestock Feeder Cattle Auction, Pratt, Kansas, reported receipts of 3,588 head selling on Feb. 8, compared to 3,286 head a week ago and 2,278 head, last year, according to the USDA-Kansas Department of Agriculture Market News, Dodge City, Kansas.

Compared to a week ago, feeder steers were selling mostly steady, feeder heifers were selling steady with instances of $2 to $3 higher on those less than 700 pounds. Steer and heifer calves were too lightly tested a week ago for a good comparison. There was good demand for this offering of attractive steers and heifers off wheat, rye grass, or triticale pastures. Flesh condition ranged from light to moderate plus. When the flesh was on the light side the cattle were selling very well and the market was the most active. However, there were plenty of cattle carrying a moderate plus amount and the market was much less active for these cattle. Several full loads in the offering, balance smaller packages and ring fulls. Slaughter cows and bulls were selling $4 to $5 higher. The feeder supply included 62% steers, 38% heifers and 88% 600 pounds and over.
