The results of the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station cotton official variety tests were released Jan. 29.
The furrow irrigated OVTs were planted at the Southwest Research and Extension Center, Altus. The dryland no-till OVTs were planted at the Tipton Valley Research Center. And the low elevation spray center pivot irrigated OVTs were planted at the Caddo Research Station, Fort Cobb.
According to the release, Altus’s conventional tillage furrow irrigated trials were planted May 25 and harvested Nov. 2. Topping the list for lint yield in the trial was PhytoGen’s PHY 300 W3FE, at 2,048 pounds per acre. The site average was 1,719 pounds per acre.
The Tipton no-till dryland trials were planted June 13 and harvested Nov. 6. At the top of the list for lint yield in the trial was PhytoGen PHY 340 W3FE, at 1,350 pounds per acre. The site average yield was 1,113 pounds per acre.
At Fort Cobb, the no-till trial was planted into terminated wheat cover May 30, center pivot irrigated, and harvested Nov. 27. The top-yielding variety at this site was Croplan’s CL9598 B3XF (Winfield United 17XL8B3XF) at 1,484 pounds per acre. The site average yield was 1,197 pound per acre.
The trials have four replicates of entries, with plot sizes of four rows wide by 30 feet long at all sites. Row spacing at both Altus and Tipton was 40 inches, and Fort Cobb spacing was 36 inches. Trials were harvested with a brush-roll plot stripper without a field cleaner and grab sampled by plot. Grab samples were ginned and lint samples were submitted for HVI analysis at Cotton Phenomics Laboratory at the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute at Texas Tech University.
