Hay market activity slow
In Kansas, hay market activity is slow due to limited supply, although demand remains good for both grinding alfalfa and grass hay. Prices for alfalfa edged higher, while grass hay stayed mostly steady, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, April 3. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest:
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $10 higher, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, small squares, $240-$250. Supreme dairy, .95-1/point RFV $175-$185; premium, $160-$170; good, $140-$150. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $165-$175. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $140-$150, with an instance at $160. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $160-$180, with an instance $200. Bluestem grass hay, large squares, $80-$90, large rounds, $70-$80. For the week ending March 31, 9,288 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,197 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sorghum ground and delivered, $105-$115; wheat hay ground and delivered, $125-$135 delivered. Cornstalks, large rounds, $55-$65, ground and delivered, $70-$80.
South central:
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, alfalfa pellets, stock cow steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $5 higher, ground and delivered steady to $20 higher, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $200-$210, dairy, .95-1/point RFV, Supreme, $175-$185; premium, $160-$170; good, $140-$150. Stock cow alfalfa, $135-$145 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $120-$135, with an instance at $150. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $165-$175. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $180-$195, 17% protein, $180-$200, dehydrated 17% $225-$235.
