Winter wheat harvest nears completion
For the week ending Aug. 5, there were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6 percent very short, 23 short, 69 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 9 percent very short, 25 short, 64 adequate, and 2 surplus.
Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 23 fair, 54 good, and 16 excellent. Corn silking was 96 percent, ahead of 90 both last year and for the five-year average. Dough was 53 percent, well ahead of 29 last year and 27 average. Dented was 4 percent, near 1 both last year and average.
Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 25 fair, 52 good, and 13 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 90 percent, equal to both last year and average. Setting pods was 69 percent, ahead of 61 last year and 58 average.
Winter wheat harvested was 90 percent, near 91 last year, but ahead of 76 average.
Spring wheat condition rated 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 36 fair, 48 good, and 3 excellent. Spring wheat harvested was 52 percent, behind 62 last year, but ahead of 36 average.
Oats harvested was 70 percent, ahead of 61 last year and 62 average.
Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 24 fair, 74 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum headed was 65 percent, ahead of 46 last year, and equal to average. Coloring was 5 percent, near 8 last year and 7 average.
