Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 10,671 head selling on Sept. 20, compared to 3,045 head a week ago and 2,795 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs between 50- to 70-pounds had a higher undertone. Feeder lambs 100- to 115-pounds were selling $10 higher while 70 to 90 pounds were selling $2 to $3 higher. Feeder lambs of 90- to 100-pounds were selling $2 to $3 lower. Slaughter ewes were selling steady to $4 lower. Market activity, for the annual sale, was active with a good demand for the long strings of lambs, yearlings, ewe lambs and replacement ewes. Offerings of feeder lambs made up 53% of the market, slaughter ewes 11% and the balance were replacement ewes.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 172 to 185 lbs., 49.00 to 50.00 (49.71). Good 3 to 4, 14 head, 210 lbs., 49.00. Utility 1 to 2, 149 to 151 lbs., 45.50 to 46.00 (45.83). Cull 1, 282 head, 133 lbs., 34.50.
