Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 3,145 head selling on Sept. 27, compared to 10,671 head a week ago and 3,854 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Feeder lambs were selling steady to $5 lower compared to the big sale a week ago with the exception of the smaller batch of 55 pounds that were selling higher by $7. Good and utility slaughter ewes were trading steady, with culls selling $3 higher and the small offering of heavy goods selling $8 lower. The offering provided a few good strings of 80 and 90 pound feeder lambs with moderate buyer interest. Feeder lambs made up 94% of the market, slaughter ewes, bucks and a handful of replacement ewes made up the balance.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 235 head, 180 lbs., 49.00. Good 3 to 4, 10 head, 214 lbs., 41.00. Utility 1 to 2, 256 head, 160 lbs., 46.00. Cull 1, 117 head, 137 lbs., 38.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 95 head, 55 lbs., 219.00; 64 to 69 lbs., 176.00 to 190.00 (183.20); 75 to 78 lbs., 145.00 to 167.00 (156.46); 81 to 88 lbs., 140.00 to 149.00 (144.89); 15 head, 89 lbs., 113.00 buck; 90 to 95 lbs., 129.00 to 141.50 (138.41); 100 to 107 lbs., 124.00 to 131.00 (127.67); 111 to 115 lbs., 121.00 to 131.00 (127.34).
