Corn and sorghum harvest progressing behind last year (South Dakota)

For the week ending Nov. 18, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according tonUSDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 9 short, 84 adequate, and 6 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 5 percent very short, 20 short, 71 adequate, and 4 surplus.

Corn harvested was 82 percent, behind 91 last year and 93 for the five-year average.

Sorghum harvested was 86 percent, near 89 last year, and behind 93 average. Sunflowers harvested was 63 percent, well behind 88 last year and 84 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 34 fair, 58 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 94 percent, behind 99 last year, and near 98 average.
