Newell sheep sales report
The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,812 head selling on Dec. 6, compared to 3,918 head a week ago and 725 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs were selling steady to $5 higher. Some weight categories were too narrow to compare. There were long strings of heavier weights comprised of attractive fleshes. Lower weights had flesh of good buying condition. Good and utility slaughter ewes were selling $2 to $4 higher respectively, fleshy good and culls were selling $3 to $6 lower respectively. The market was slow with a moderate demand. Feeder lambs made up 70% of the market with replacement ewes, slaughter ewes and bucks making up the balance.
Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 79 head, 172 lbs., 54.00. Good 3 to 4, 41 head, 209 lbs., 46.00. Utility 1 to 2, 129 head, 154 lbs., 54.00. Cull 1, 99 head, 139 lbs., 40.00.
Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 17 head, 43 lbs., 222.00; 57 to 59 lbs., 211.00 to 226.00 (217.18); 60 to 67 lbs., 184.00 to 211.00 (203.77); 73 to 79 lbs., 172.00 to 180.00 (174.46); 15 head, 70 lbs., 191.00 ewe lambs; 85 to 86 lbs., 159.00 to 165.00 (160.02); 36 head, 94 lbs., 152.00; 100 to 104 lbs., 146.00 to 153.75 (150.45); 33 head, 122 lbs., 124.00.
Fleshy bucks: 6 head at 240 lbs., 42.00 per hundredweight.
