Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, South Dakota, reported receipts of 919 head selling Dec. 13, compared to 2,812 head a week ago and 2,151 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs under 80 pounds were not well compared, 80 to 90 pounds were selling $5 higher, 90 to 100 pounds were selling steady, 120 to 130 pounds were trading $2 lower. Good and cull ewes were selling $5 to $7 higher. There was very good demand for several strings and packages of feeder lambs and slaughter ewes that sold on an active to very active market. The offering consisted of 78% feeder lambs and 22% slaughter ewes and bucks. The next sale will be in 2019.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 167 to 180 lbs., 57.00 to 61.00 (58.04). Good 3 to 4, 212 to 217 lbs., 68.00 to 69.00 (68.86). Utility 1 to 2, 148 to 151 lbs., 54.00 to 55.00 (54.67). Cull 1, 18 head, 137 lbs., 47.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 50 head, 63 lbs., 219.00; 61 to 68 lbs., 195.00 to 196.00 (195.24) full; 73 to 76 lbs., 167.00 to 175.00 (172.75); 80 to 85 lbs., 159.00 to 171.50 (169.98); 90 to 99 lbs., 148.00 to 151.00 (149.69); 10 head, 108 lbs., 132.00; 38 head, 114 lbs., 132.00; 21 head, 126 lbs., 119.00 to 121.00 (119.57); 100 head, 121 lbs., 145.50 thin fleshed; 12 head, 135 lbs., 117.00. Medium and large frame 2, 18 head, 53 lbs., 211.00.
