Most hay classes trading steady

In Nebraska, compared to two weeks ago, all reported baled forages sold steady. Dehydrated pellets sold $20 higher in the eastern side of the state with the Platte Valley trading steady. Demand was light the first week of the New Year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jan. 4. Prices given on per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Eastern/central—Good alfalfa, large rounds, $90-$105 and $125-$140 delivered. Premium grass hay, large rounds, $100-$105; good, large rounds, $85-$90; fair, large rounds, $65-$75. Cornstalk bales, $60-$65. Cornstalk bales, $60-$65. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $280-$290.

Platte Valley—Good alfalfa, rounds, $95-$110. Cornstalk bales, $60-$65. Ground and delivered alfalfa, $140-$145. Ground and delivered alfalfa-stubble mix, $130-$135. Ground and delivered cornstalks, $95-$110. Dehydrated pellets, 17% protein, $215-$230.

Western—Premium alfalfa, large squares, $175-$180; good, large squares, $150-$160, large rounds, $130-$145;. fair, large squares, $130-$145 Good/premium alfalfa orchard grass, large squares, $180-$200. Straw, large squares, $90. Ground and delivered alfalfa, $150-$155.

In South Dakota, East River and West River areas, alfalfa and grass steady on all grades. This marks the largest volume of hay moved in two weeks. Good to very good demand for hay with two recent snow storms lead directly into above average warm winter weather.

East River—Supreme alfalfa, large squares, $195-$240; good, large rounds, $160-$170; fair, large squares, $120-$150, large rounds, $130. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $185, 17% protein $190. Alfalfa meal 17%, $195. Fair grass, large rounds, $120-$130; utility, large rounds, $100. Good alfalfa grass mix, rounds, $150; fair, large rounds, $120. Straw, large squares, $120-$140. Cornstalks, large rounds, $60.

West River—Alfalfa, no reported sales. Alfalfa/grass mix, no reported sales. Grass, no reported sales, Straw, no reported sales.

In Iowa, all hay classes traded steady.

Rock Valley—Premium alfalfa, large rounds, $152.50-$165; good, large rounds, $140-$150; fair, large rounds, $120-$137.50; utility, large rounds, $105-$117.50. Premium grass, large rounds, $160-$175, small squares, $205; good, large rounds, $140-$157.50, large squares, $152.50; fair, large rounds, $120-$125. Good alfalfa grass mix, large squares, $135. Sudan grass, large rounds, $112.50. Straw, large rounds, $107.50, large squares, $110-$115. Cornstalks, large rounds, $55-$62.50.

In Minnesota, prices were generally steady.

Good orchard grass mix, large squares, $140; premium, small squares, $200-$225. Certified weed seed free alfalfa cubes, $230-$240, bagged $280.

In Colorado, hay trade activity and demand light. This report will not update until Jan. 10, 2019.

Northeast—Supreme alfalfa, large squares, $220, delivered, small squares, $325, retail/stable; utility, large squares, $175, $200 delivered. Premium grass, small squares, $350, retail/stable. No reported quotes for all other classes of hay.

In Missouri, the supply of hay light to moderate. Hay prices are steady. Hay demand is moderate to good.

Supreme alfalfa, RFV 185 $180-$225, small squares, $7-$10/bale; premium, RFV 170-180, $150-$200; good, RFV 150-170 $120-$160, small squares $5-$7/bale; fair, RFV 130-150, $100-$120. In Oklahoma, alfalfa trade remained at a near standstill this week with holidays and weather limiting movement. Most hay movement consisted of previous trades and contracts.

Central—Premium alfalfa, large squares, $200-$220; good, large squares and rounds, $180-$200; fair, $140-$160. Good bermuda grass hay in 4 x 6 through 5 x 6 bales, $55-$70/bale, few in 4 x 5 bales, $50. Good mixed grass hay, 5 x 5 and 5 x 6 bales, $50-$60/bale. Mixed grass $80-$90/ton, few to $100.

Eastern—No alfalfa sales reported. Mixed grass hay, 4 x 5 bales $50-$60/bale.

Western—Premium alfalfa, large square bales, $200-$220, mostly $200; good, large rounds and squares, $180-$200. Few loads grass alfalfa in large rounds, $155. Grinding hay, $140-$150. Good mixed grass, rounds, $90-$110/ton. Mixed grass, 5 x 5 1/2 to 5 x 6 bales, $50-$70/bale. Good wheat hay, 5 x 6 bales, $55/bale.

In Texas, most hay classes traded steady; except for ground alfalfa sold $5 lower as it competes with cheaper rations. Trade activity and demand were moderate as we start off a new year.

Panhandle/High Plains—Premium/supreme alfalfa, large squares, delivered $275-$300; premium, small bales, delivered, $315-$330; good/premium, large squares, $250-$275; fair/good, large squares, $210-$250. Ground and delivered to feedlots, average $225-$235, calf, $235-$240. Wheat, large bales, delivered, $175-$190. Wheat alfalfa mix, ground and delivered, $175-$195. Good/premium coastal bermuda, large bales, delivered, $180-$215. Cotton Burrs, delivered, $95-$105. Millet, large bales, delivered, $115-$125. Ground and delivered, $165.

Far west Texas/Trans Pecos—Premium/supreme alfalfa, small squares, delivered local or FOB, $290-$360, large squares, FOB, $275-$280; fair/good, $220-$250.
