Corn to a Cattleman

Without Corn, there is no Cattle.  Whether you’re in the Beef or Dairy industry you need corn hybrids that produce.  Not only in yield, but in quality.  We all know that grain corn simply needs big bushel numbers, but silage corn gets a little more complicated.  Some companies focus everything on quality and crush the competition in milk per ton and some companies focus on yield and push out monster tonnage.  Here at Revolution Soil and Seed, we focus on Milk and Beef Per Acre because it is the only metric that truly focuses on a healthy balance of tonnage and quality.

Revolution Soil and Seed was founded by a Dairyman with the sole purpose of finding, growing, testing and providing quality crops developed to optimize cattle production.  Today, RSS works hand in hand with our founding dairies to grow and test corn hybrids that maximize feed efficiency.

Since our start, we have seen hybrids produce huge milk/ton numbers and have such abysmal  tonnage we would have needed thousands of acres to produce our feed for the year.  We have seen crops put up gigantic tonnage with quality numbers so low, it was nothing more than low quality filler feed.  We have even seen the same hybrid hit both extremes in different years

So, what have we learned? — We have learned that looking at test results from one trial, from one year will always lead to failure. We have learned that planting just one or two hybrids because they have always been steady is a good way to fall back into the Stone Age.  We have also learned that hybrids can do great in one field and poorly in another right across the street with all the same inputs.  However, maybe the most important thing we’ve learned is that in order to properly judge the success or failure of a crop, you must first know what you want from the crop.

For our Founding Dairyman, the success of a crop was measured in milk/ton because that’s what was needed to improve milk production.  For our farmers, the success of a crop was measured in tonnage, because that’s how they got paid.  Now, our entire community looks at the success of a crop in terms of milk per acre.  This metric has given our founding dairy and supporting community a way for both parties to compromise and succeed.
