Backyard Laying Hen Workshop set for May 10

Register for free event by May 8.
University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist Patrick Davis says backyard poultry production is increasingly integrated into family lifestyles.
This small-scale poultry production serves both as a food source and income stream for families, Davis says. MU Extension, in collaboration with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, will host a Backyard Laying Hen Workshop 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the MU Extension Center in Barton County, 801 E. 12th St., Lamar.
“This workshop is designed for both experienced and novice small-scale poultry producers,” says Heather Conrow, MU Extension livestock field specialist. Conrow will collaborate with Tatijana Fisher, Lincoln University state extension poultry specialist, to discuss basic management practices to maintain a healthy backyard flock. The workshop will also cover biosecurity, licensing and labeling requirements, processing, and washing and grading eggs. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to engage in equipment demonstrations and processing, candling and grading of eggs.
“Whether you have a small number of chickens in your backyard or operate a thriving egg business at a farmers market, there is valuable information for everyone,” says Fisher. Conrow recommends youth participation: “We highly encourage the younger generations to get involved in these kinds of projects.”
The event is free of charge. Register by May 8 at http://bit.ly/42A4jZl. For further inquiries, contact the MU Extension Center in Barton County at 417-682-3579 or Davis at davismp@missouri.edu.
