Hebrews 12:1-13
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. —Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)
As a new department head within the National Park Service, I had to prepare press releases to inform the public about upcoming events and safety alerts in the parks. After drafting my first press release, I thought it looked fairly good. But to make sure it was free of grammatical errors, I asked one of my employees who had good editing skills if he would review it.
To my surprise, he suggested several changes. I made the needed corrections, and these changes kept my press release from being sent to the media with several errors.
Similarly, as someone who wants to have Christlike character, I should continually ask God to review my life. As Psalm 139:23-24 states, “Search me, God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me.” How often I have thought, perhaps there are a few minor adjustments I could make. But overall, I’m doing fine. However, when I sincerely seek and welcome examination, the Lord kindly points out the mistakes that need attention. By taking this to heart, I can make the needed changes and live out the Christlike character God desires in me.
Prayer: Dear Lord, examine us and help us make the corrections we need to embody the character and qualities you desire. Amen.
Thought for the day: I will ask the Lord to examine and refine my character.
