AAA urges post-winter car washes to prevent costly rust damage

AAA is urging drivers to wash road salt and de-icing chemicals from their vehicles to help prevent costly repairs.

The organization recommends washing vehicles after every significant winter storm, paying particular attention to the undercarriage. Road treatments used on streets and parking lots can accelerate rust and corrode brake and fuel lines, according to AAA.

Previous AAA research estimates Americans spend $3 billion annually on repairs related to rust damage caused by de-icing materials.

“Taking the time for a quick car wash now could save both time and money down the road,” said Shawn Steward, public affairs manager for AAA Kansas. “Corroded brake lines, often the result of road salts and de-icers, can cost hundreds of dollars to replace, or more, depending on the vehicle.”

AAA recommends using car washes that offer undercarriage rinses to remove buildup on critical components. Drivers washing vehicles at home or at self-service facilities should focus on the wheels, wheel wells and underbody.

AAA also advises drivers to limit travel before, during and after winter storms when salt and de-icing solutions are at their highest concentrations.

Other recommendations include using a car wash solution rather than household dish detergent, repairing paint chips and body damage that expose bare metal and giving the vehicle a thorough cleaning in the spring to remove lingering deposits.

Drivers are encouraged to dry vehicles completely after washing, especially when temperatures are near freezing. Moisture left on door seals and in door jambs can freeze as temperatures drop.

Interior care is also important, AAA said. Wet floor mats from melting snow can trap moisture and contribute to rust inside the vehicle. Mats should be removed, cleaned and dried before reinstalling.

AAA said washing vehicles during winter is safe when temperatures are above freezing. If temperatures are below freezing, soap and rinse water can refreeze on components under the vehicle.

The organization also advises drivers to seek immediate service if they notice in-dash warning lights for brakes or other critical systems, a soft brake pedal, unusually loud exhaust noise, fuel odors or the smell of exhaust fumes in or around the vehicle. Drivers experiencing these issues should move to a safe location and have the vehicle towed to a repair facility.
