Syngenta adds botanical disease control product to Americas portfolio

Syngenta and Botanical Solution Inc. have expanded an exclusive agreement to bring a botanical-based biofungicide to additional markets in the Americas, including the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The product, Quillibrium, is derived from the Quillaja saponaria tree, native to Chile, and is produced using BSI’s plant tissue culture platform. The companies said the technology allows for consistent extracts without harvesting protected trees.

The expanded agreement builds on collaboration between the two companies since 2021 in Chile and Peru, where the product has been used on crops including grapes, tomatoes, berries and cherries. It targets diseases such as Botrytis, sour rot, powdery mildew and Alternaria.

Under the new arrangement, Syngenta will distribute Quillibrium for use in crop protection, turf and ornamentals, and post-harvest applications. In Chile, the product is marketed as BotriStop.

Company officials said the agreement broadens access to biological crop protection tools as growers adopt integrated pest management programs that combine biological and conventional approaches.

Emilhano Lima, Syngenta’s global head of seedcare and biologicals, said the expansion strengthens the company’s biologicals portfolio and supports disease control strategies across multiple crops.

BSI CEO Gaston Salinas said the product is designed to help growers manage pathogens while maintaining yield and quality, adding that biological solutions can support broader adoption of integrated pest management.

The companies noted that the biologicals market is projected to exceed $20 billion by 2030, reflecting increased interest in nature-based crop protection tools.

BSI, a Delaware corporation, produces its active ingredient, ABM-01, from Quillaja saponaria. The compound is used in Quillibrium and in QS-21, an adjuvant used in certain vaccines.
