Most people have been to a funeral or many funerals. Attendees know the pattern they follow: a visitation before the service, the actual service, the trip to the cemetery and graveside service and then back to the church for the funeral meal.
Today, with the increase of cremations, the funeral meal comes right after the service. That meal, a time to gather around the table, has become its own tradition.
Certain foods are common at these meals. Their presence is a sign that life goes on, bringing us a sense of comfort within a family’s loss. On April 15, the Oklahoma Home and Community Education Genealogy Group will host Luann Waters as she presents Funeral Food for Those Living and to Remember Those Gone. Waters will have some handouts and recipes to share.
The meeting is at 10 a.m. at the Oklahoma County Extension Center, 2500 N.E. 63rd St., Oklahoma City, and is open to the public. OHCE Genealogy Group meets the third Wednesday of the month with a focus on genealogy and family history. More information can be found on Facebook page: OHCE Genealogy Group.
