Step back in time at Corn Pickers of the Past

Experience corn harvest the old-fashioned way at the Franklin County Corn Pickers of the Past biennial corn-picking event Oct. 10.

Take a step back to a simpler time when neighbors gathered, machinery rumbled through the fields and corn was picked the way generations before us knew it. The event began in 2014 with a desire to preserve a piece of agricultural heritage, remember the hard work of days gone by and share that history with younger generations.

The contest begins at 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Shawnee Road and Ohio Road, west of Wellsville, Kansas.

People are encouraged to bring the entire family and enjoy a day of old-fashioned farm fun. Concessions and a kids’ play area will be available.

Organizers asked those with an old picker, tractor or other equipment to bring it and put it to work. “We’d love to have you join in the fun,” they said.

Wagons of ear corn will also be available for purchase. For questions, contact Fred Seymour at 913-238-0127 or John Lynn at 913-634-5830.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Oct. 17.
