Temperature swings occur add to a rancher’s challenge

We are finally getting some cooler temperatures. However, with these cooler temperatures we are now getting some swings in temperature that range from cooler and soon to be cold and toward noon often hot.

And with this scenario calves that are not weaned can get sick easier. Ranchers that sell their calves off the cow have a hard time with the reality that they will get sick. Often ranchers think a two- week weaning is good enough for the new buyer; however, I have several customers that will not buy one unless the calf is 45 days weaned and some prefer even a longer period.

That same customer would rather have them straight off the cow with preweaning shots than that short weaned. Going to the feedlot a lot of buyers want 90 days weaned to feel comfortable they won’t get sick and they are willing to pay top dollar.

Our area started receiving moisture about three weeks ago changing our potential for wheat pasture and a little time for grass growth. We were extremely dry before that time with a huge area dry. The last time I remember being that dry I remember hearing older ranchers say it doesn’t matter if it starts raining now it is too late. However, that was in August and a freak year where we grew lots of grass before it froze. This time it was much later when it started raining. Thus, hay is very short in supply and what little hay there is it is price at a very high figure.

I often wonder if it gets dry simply because that is too only time God hears from us.

With the mid-terms getting closer it makes me nervous if America votes for anyone promoting socialism or communism. Remember some will tell you what you want to hear and then get into office and do what they want.

My wife said to me, “Did you notice I haven’t been speaking to you for two days?” I said, “Yes, I noticed.” She said, “What do you have to say about that?” I said, “Can I get two more days?”

When I run into people that say, “You look familiar” I just ask them, “Do you really watch that kind of stuff on the internet?” That pretty much ends that conversation.

I told my sister I want to get a divorce because my wife is out every night going from bar to bar. My sister said, “Is she cheating or an alcoholic?” I said, “No she’s looking for me.“
