Winter Livestock Auction report

The Winter Livestock Auction, Dodge City, Kansas, reported estimated receipts of 2,698 head selling Dec. 19, compared to 3,237 head a week ago and 1,446 head last year, according to the USDA-Kansas Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Dodge City, Kansas.

Compared to a week ago, feeder steers 600 to 650 pounds were selling steady to $3 higher, 750 to 800 pounds were selling steady to $2 lower. Feeder heifers were selling $1 to $2 lower on limited comparable weights. Steer calves 550 to 600 pounds were selling $5 to $6 higher using a limited test. Heifer calves 450 to 550 pounds were selling $3 to $4 lower using a limited test. Slaughter cows were selling steady to firm. There were not enough bulls for a market test. Overall, demand was moderate to good, quality was average to attractive. The feeder supply was 63% steers, 34% heifers, 01% bulls, with 73% over 600 pounds. The bred heifer and cow supply included 00% first calf, 24% bred cows, 76% cow/calf pairs, 00% replacement heifers. There is no sale next week due to the holiday. The next sale is Jan. 2, 2019.
