NASS provides winter wheat crop conditions

According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending June 10, winter wheat crop conditions in High Plains Journal’s coverage area were as follows:

Arkansas: Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 21 fair, 54 good, and 6 excellent.

Colorado: Statewide, winter wheat was rated 53 percent good to excellent, compared with 48 percent good to excellent last year.

Kansas: Winter wheat condition rated 15 percent very poor, 32 poor, 37 fair, 15 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 80 percent, near 82 last year, but ahead of 67 for the five-year average. Mature was 29 percent, equal to last year. Harvested was 2 percent, near 3 last year, and equal to average.

Minnesota: Ninety-eight percent of Minnesota’s spring wheat crop had emerged, 5 days ahead of the five-year average. However, spring wheat jointed or beyond is five days behind the average, at 34 percent.

Missouri: Winter wheat harvested progressed to 8 percent, 1 percentage point ahead of the 5-year average. Winter wheat condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 6 percent excellent.

Montana: Chouteau County reported wet conditions leading to problems in the wheat crop, with pythium root rot and wheat stem sawfly observed.

Nebraska: Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 poor, 23 fair, 52 good, and 16 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 88 percent, behind 99 last year, but near 85 average.

New Mexico: Winter wheat condition rated 33 percent very poor, 30 poor, 10 fair, 14 good, and 13 excellent.

Oklahoma: Winter wheat harvested reached 49 percent, up 1 point from the previous year.

South Dakota: Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 12 poor, 41 fair, 45 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 73 percent, behind 92 last year, but ahead of 59 average.

Texas: Winter wheat in the Northern High Plains ripened quickly. Wheat producers in the Northern Plains were expecting harvest to begin soon. Wheat harvest was winding down in the Cross Timbers and the Blacklands.

Wyoming: Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 2 poor, 41 fair, 48 good, and 7 excellent.
