Hub City livestock auction report
The Hub City Livestock Auction, Aberdeen, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,356 head selling Dec. 19, compared to 3,068 head a week ago and 3,232 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, there were different weight classes and fewer cattle. Best comparison was on steer calves 550 to 600 pounds that were selling steady to $3 lower, 601 to 650 pounds were selling steady. Heifer calves 500 to 600 pounds were trading steady. Yearling cattle were not well compared. Mostly packages of both calves and yearlings with just a handful of loads offered and good to very good demand seen for all. Mostly plain to average quality on the yearlings and average to attractive on the calves. The majority of the calf offering was weaned and flesh varied depending on feedstuffs, but mostly moderate to moderate plus. An active market with both order buyers and a few farmers attending. Steers made up 52% of the feeder supply, heifers 48%, 62% over 600 pounds. This is the last feeder cattle sale of 2018. The next feeder cattle sale will be Jan. 5, 2019.
