Brown County Range and Brush Program will be July 12 in Brownwood

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the Brown County Range and Brush Program on July 12 at the Brown County Fairgrounds, 4206 U.S. Highway 377 South in Brownwood.

Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the program to follow from 3 to 9 p.m. Individual registration is $35 by July 3 and $45 thereafter. For more information and to preregister, call the AgriLife Extension office in Brown County at 325-646-0386.

“Brush encroachment continues to be an expensive problem to deal with,” said Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent in Brown County. “It doesn’t take long for weeds and brush to choke out desirable grasses forcing a reduction in livestock stocking rates.

“Dry weather has allowed many weeds to outgrow our pasture grasses. If left unchecked, these pasture invaders can even make large areas undesirable for livestock and some wildlife. Our aim with this program is to explore ways we can better manage our native pasture to its optimum state whether it’s for livestock, wildlife or both.”

The program’s topics and speakers will include:

Pesticide Labels and Product Application, Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Uvalde;

Herbicides for Pastures, Gerald Hobson, Bayer Crop Sciences range and pasture specialist, Peaster;

Oak Wilt Management in Pastures, David Appel, AgriLife Extension plant pathology specialist, College Station;

Problem Weed Management, Scott Nolte, AgriLife Extension weed specialist, College Station;

Pasture Plant Invaders, Morgan Russell, AgriLife Extension range specialist, San Angelo; and

Pesticide Laws and Regulations, Anderson.

Six Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units, three general, two laws and regulations and one integrated pest management, will be offered.
