The Kansas Sunflower Commission is hosting a variety plot tour on Aug. 3 in Reno County, Kansas, near Hutchinson. Sunflower Commissioner Cameron Peirce (620-727-1207) will host the tour at his farm in rural Reno county.
Attendees will be able to see 17 varieties of sunflower planted on May 23. The 30-by-500-foot plots are planted with 11 Croplan, four Kaufman, two Pioneer and one Mycogen varieties. The sunflowers will be past the bloom stage but the seed will be set so that participants can see the size and volume of seed for each variety.
The variety plots are an FFA project of Peirce’s youngest son, Hayden. The plots are part of Hayden’s FFA Supervised Agriculture Experience.
The tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will end at 10:30 a.m. Participants should arrive by 8:30 at the meeting spot, one mile east and 1/2-mile south of the intersection of Highway 14 and Greenfield Road. Driveway is on the east side of the road.
The Kansas Sunflower Commission is an elected group of growers from across the state supporting the Kansas Sunflower industry through producer check-off dollars.
