Northeast Panhandle Crop Profitability Conference set Jan. 19 in Perryton

The Northeast Panhandle Crop Profitability Conference, hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Ochiltree and Lipscomb counties, will be Jan. 19 at the Ochiltree County Expo Center, 402 Expo Drive, Perryton.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the program from 9:30 a.m. to noon. There will be a $10 fee.

“This program is real helpful for producers because it is the time of the year they start planning ahead for the next cropping year,” said Scott Strawn, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent in Ochiltree County. “Looking at budgets and markets helps them start thinking about acreage and resource allocations such as seed, chemicals, fertilizer, fuel, etc. It also helps them start developing marketing plans for the next year.

“Even with the wheat crop already established, it still could help them determine if they are going to graze out, go to grain, hay or terminate it and use it as a cover crop for another crop such as cotton,” he said.

DeDe Jones, AgriLife Extension risk management program specialist in Amarillo, will review crop budgets and the Crop Profitability Analyzer. Steve Amosson, AgriLife Extension economist in Amarillo, will discuss market outlooks for all of the crops grown in Ochiltree and Lipscomb counties—corn, wheat, grain sorghum, soybeans and cotton.
