Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction report

The Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 4,832 head selling on Jan. 12, compared to 5,272 head a week ago and 5,589 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, feeder steers were selling $5 to $10 lower, except 600 to 650 pounds and 800 to 850 pounds were trading $2 to $4 lower. Feeder heifers were selling $6 to $8 lower except under 600 pounds were trading steady to $2 lower. Good demand for this offering of feeder cattle, many long strings, full loads and packages. Flesh condition was mostly moderate plus as most of the offering was long time weaned on a back grounding ration. The market was lower but still active. A lower futures market along with a lower fat cattle trade pressured the feeder market. The offering included 54% steers, 46% heifers. 82% were over 600 pounds.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 5 head, 417 lbs., 202.00; 8 head, 473 lbs., 180.00; 501 to 547 lbs., 174.00 to 185.50 (177.78); 554 to 595 lbs., 175.00 to 188.50 (184.93); 602 to 623 lbs., 169.00 to 180.00 (177.39); 655 to 697 lbs., 150.50 to 167.00 (161.15); 702 to 749 lbs., 149.00 to 165.00 (157.94); 763 to 799 lbs., 142.00 to 154.00 (149.33); 811 to 835 lbs., 144.00 to 152.00 (147.92). Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 15 head, 444 lbs., 191.00; 44 head, 608 lbs., 165.50.
