Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction report
The Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 5,049 head selling on March 9, compared to 4,176 head a week ago, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, feeder steers over 700 pounds were selling steady to instances of $3 higher, under 700 pounds were too lightly tested a week ago to compare. Feeder heifers were selling mostly steady with few instances to $2 higher. Good demand for this nice offering of very attractive, high quality feeder steers and heifers and also for the many strings of replacement quality heifers. Flesh conditions ranged from light to even heavy on a few consignments, but most were in that light to moderate range. Many long strings and full loads in this offering for back grounding, finishing or heifers to take back to the country to breed. There were plenty of buyers actively bidding throughout the sale. The market was more active this week as the futures contracts posted triple digit gains and the cash fed cattle market in the north was steady. The offering was 95% over 600 pounds with 63 percent steers and 37% heifers.
