Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction report
The Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 5,698 head selling on May 18, compared to 6,446 head selling at the May 4 sale and 3,587 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to the May 4 sale, feeder steers were trading on a steady to lower undertone with a limited comparison. Feeder heifers weighing 650 to 800 pounds were selling from $6 to $8 lower, with instances selling $10 lower. Feeder heifers weighing over 800 pounds were selling $5 to $6 lower. There was fair to good demand for offerings on the load lots, part loads and packages in offering. There were several long strings with multiple loads of one owner cattle being offered. Some long strings of replacement heifers going back to the country were purchased on a softer market. A lower cash fat cattle trade along with lower futures market a week ago had buyers cautious in their purchases. The offering included 94% over 600 pounds with 31% steers and 69% heifers.
