Aberdeen livestock auction report

The Hub City Livestock Auction, Aberdeen, South Dakota, reported receipts of 7,045 head on Jan. 31, compared to 5,395 head last week and 5,674 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, the steers weighing 550 to 900 pounds were mostly steady with those 901 to 950 pounds were selling $2 to $4 higher. The heifers from 550 to 800 pounds were mostly steady except 600- to 650-pounders selling $3 to $5 higher. There was good to very good demand for this large offering with best demand seen for a couple strings of fancy, light weight, light fleshed cattle suitable for summer grass. The majority of the offering was home raised and there were several strings available letting buyers procure multiple loads from one outfit. There were many loads in the offering as well. The flesh varied from light to moderate plus for the most part. The quality was attractive throughout the sale. There was an active market with many buyers and producers attending. Steers made up 67% of the feeder supply and heifers were 33% with 89% over 600 pounds.
