Hay market activity slow to moderate
In Kansas, hay market activity is slow to moderate. Demand good for all alfalfa, as supplies and offerings for alfalfa continue to be scarce. Grass hay inquiries have increased. Prices overall are generally steady, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Feb. 6. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, and ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa $5 higher, movement moderate. Alfalfa, horse, small squares, $240-$250. Supreme dairy, .85-.95/point RFV $155-$175; premium, $155-$165; good, $135-$155. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $115-$125. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $130-$140 with an instance at $150. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $145-$155, with an instance at $160-$165. Bluestem grass hay, large squares, $80-$90. For the week ending Feb. 3, 9,217 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,119 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Cornstalks, large rounds, $55-$65, ground and delivered, $70-$75.
South central: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, alfalfa pellets, stock cow and ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $5 higher, movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $240-$245, dairy, .90-.95/point RFV, supreme, $155-$165; premium, $150-$160; good, $130-$150. Stock cow alfalfa, $135-$140 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $110-$125, with an instance at $130. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $135-$145.
