NAWG sets policy priorities

The National Association of Wheat Growers Board of Directors met Feb. 27 at Commodity Classic in Anaheim, California.

Among the many actions of the board were setting new policy resolutions.

NAWG passed a resolution regarding Section 199a in the recently adopted tax law. The resolution states that NAWG opposes any tax law that doesn’t maintain the previous competitive balance between cooperatives and other agribusinesses and the farmers who sell their crops to them in agreements that existed prior to enactment of the tax reform bill.

NAWG board members also approved a resolution offered by Texas to urge the Administration to avoid imposing trade barriers based on national security concerns, because as committee chairman Ken Wood explained anytime there’s trade retaliation ag usually takes the brunt of the hits.

NAWG also approved replacing the phrase “biotechnology” in its committee titles, resolutions and other instances to “Wheat Breeding Innovation” to reflect the growing advancements in plant breeding innovations beyond “biotechnology.”

Among the other resolutions proposed were to support the use of certified grain scale tickets to prove production numbers to federal agencies; supporting any health care plant that would improve coverage options and lower premiums for farm families; and supporting exemption of agricultural production from the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate.

From Montana there was a resolution supporting County FSA offices being the determining agency to set emergency haying and grazing dates.
