Springfield Livestock market report
The Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Missouri, reported receipts of 940 head selling on April 4, compared to 653 head a week ago and 1,809 head last year, according to the USDA-Missouri Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Jefferson City, Missouri.
Compared to a light test a week ago, steer and heifer calves were selling $3 to $5 lower. There were too few yearlings a week ago for price comparison but a lower undertone was noted. Holsteins under 600 pounds were selling steady to firm, while over 600 pounds were not tested. Demand was moderate, supply was light. There is plenty of moisture available, but we need the soil temperature to rise to get the fescue growing. Hard to do with the temperature starting the day in the twenties. The feeder cattle supply included 38% steers, 8% dairy steers, 48% heifers and 7% bulls. The feeder cattle supply over 600 pounds was 32%.
