‘Green Acres’ program to help rural homeowners with land management and care
Many people dream of moving out to the country where they can enjoy wildlife, grow a garden, and keep a few chickens, a couple goats, and a horse. Some dream of making extra money selling vegetables, dairy and meat direct from their farm or at farmers markets. However, there can be challenges and questions in making those dreams a reality. Where do I find land that will meet my needs? How many cows, horses, sheep or goats can I keep on my land? How do I control weeds in my pasture? How do I improve my soil? What permits do I need to sell at the farmers market? These are just a few of the questions landowners may have.
The Green Acres Program, presented by Cleveland County OSU Extension Center, is designed to help those planning to move to the country, as well as those who have already taken the plunge. The three-part program will take place on May 16, 23, and 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in classroom C at the Cleveland County OSU Extension Center located at 601 E. Robinson St. in Norman.
The program includes goal setting, land purchasing, soil fertility, water resources, pasture management, poultry and livestock production, fruit and vegetable production, and other topics of interest. The program will be flexible depending on the interests of participants.
The best part about the program is that participants will receive resources and information that work in central Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service researches, evaluates, and provides the best agricultural information to ensure the success of Oklahomans.
Registration for the Green Acres Program is $40 per person and $10 for each additional person from the same family or farm. Payment is due the first night of the program and covers program materials and refreshments. Those interested are asked to register by calling the Cleveland Country OSU Extension Center at 405-321-4774 by May 9.
