How have we made it nearly 2 full weeks into June? Some people track the year in holidays or even mark the days off the calendar. Me? I struggle knowing what day of the week it is because we work weeks ahead on the paper and I have to look on my phone to see what the actual date is. I should probably never fear, though, as I have certain events engrained into my brain that help keep me on track.
The first Saturday in May is the Kentucky Derby, then Mother’s Day. My oldest boy’s birthday is some where between those two (he was actually born on Mother’s Day). Memorial Day is a time to remember those who served and protected our country. It also brings the "start" to the rodeo season as there’s more than a few junior, amateur and professional rodeos all around us. The first week of June brings the events of Beef Empire Days—the live show, the cattle working contest and some other special events. First weekend of June also brings the High Plains Livestock Classic.
I can’t possibly be the only person who marks the progress of the year by events? Especially in the summer time. My boys had baseball in May even before school got out. Although it was early, it was nice not to have to fight the heat of June and even July for evening baseball games.
June also brings harvest and all it’s related activities. It doesn’t look like it’ll be a long drawn out process this year as there’s not much wheat around because of drought conditions. But it’s still a time for farmers, ranchers and everyone in and around agriculture to rejoice in bringing in another crop.
Before we know it will be the 4th of July and we’ll have to decide if we want to light the country side on fire with a expensive box of fireworks or if we want to go to town and watch their display. I have fond memories of my Dad bringing home "family packs" of fireworks for each of us girls and we’d be out there blowing things up until well past our bed times.
Soon in Dodge City it’ll be time for the Ford County Fair, then Dodge City Days—a nearly 2 week celebration of my hometown’s western history. The town practically floods with people celebrating with the locals and some of the best cowboys and cowgirls competing at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. After the rodeo wraps up school will soon start and it’ll be back to the grind for students.
Summer time is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy the hot weather, swimming and all the events to go to. But it’s also nice to be able to slow down, relax and soak it all in. What are some of your favorite events to go to? Share in the comments section below if you’d like!
