Hay market trade light to moderate

In Kansas, hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Prices mostly steady to firm for alfalfa and grass hay, on a light test. Demand remains very good for all hay types. Yields for both alfalfa and grass hay continue to be reported as below average, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, July 10. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $5 lower, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, small squares, $280-$300. Dairy, .95-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $140-$155. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $150-$170. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $185-$200. Grass hay, pasture mix, small squares, $8-$9/bale. Cornstalks, large rounds, $60-$70, ground and delivered $95-$105. For the week ending July 7, 8,747 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,275 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.

South central: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, grass hay, alfalfa pellets steady, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $190-$200. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV, supreme, $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow alfalfa, $145-$160 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $135-$155, with an instance at $170-$180. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $170-$180, with an instance $195. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $195-$210, 17% protein, $200-$215, dehydrated 17% $250-$260. Grass hay, brome, $110-$120. Oat hay, large squares, $85-$95. Wheat hay, large squares, $145-$155 delivered. Rye hay, large rounds, $95-$105. Cornstalks, none reported. Straw, large rounds, $65-$75. For the week ending July 7, 5,222 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,085 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.

Southeast: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, grass hay, steady, movement slow. Horse/goat alfalfa, $220-$245. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV. Stock cow alfalfa, $175-$185. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $145-$155. Ground and delivered, none reported. Premium bluestem grass hay, small squares, $120-$130. Good, medium and large squares, $100-$115, with an instance $120-$135, large rounds, $100-$110, with an instance at $120. Brome, small squares, none reported. Good, medium and large squares, $125-$135, large rounds, $105-$115. Oat hay, medium squares, $150-$160. Straw, medium and large squares, $70-$80. Mulch, large rounds, $50-$60. For the week ending July 7, 920 tons of grass hay were delivered.

Northwest: Dairy alfalfa .05/point higher, grinding alfalfa and ground and delivered steady to $20 higher, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse or goat, $220-$230. Premium/supreme dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV. Fair/good stock cow, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa $120-$140. Ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies $145-$165.

North central/northeast: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $10 higher, movement slow. Premium horse alfalfa, small squares, $9-$10/bale. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Good stock cow, $120-$125. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $140-$150, $165-$175 delivered.
