Winter wheat harvest behind a year ago

For the week ending July 22, there were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 14 short, 77 adequate, and 7 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 4 percent very short, 18 short, 74 adequate, and 4 surplus.

Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 4 poor, 23 fair, 52 good, and 19 excellent. Corn silking was 76 percent, well ahead of 41 last year and 47 for the five-year average. Dough was 10 percent, ahead of 1 last year and 2 average.

Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 27 fair, 51 good, and 14 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 68 percent, ahead of 60 last year, and near 66 average. Setting pods was 29 percent, ahead of 18 last year and 19 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 43 fair, 43 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat harvested was 47 percent, well behind 68 last year, but ahead of 38 average.

Spring wheat condition rated 3 percent very poor, 11 poor, 37 fair, 45 good, and 4 excellent. Spring wheat harvested was 7 percent, behind 25 last year, and near 9 average.

Oats condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 25 fair, 67 good, and 6 excellent. Oats harvested was 23 percent, behind 32 last year, and near 25 average.
