Newell Sheep sales report

The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 3,132 head selling on Aug. 2, compared to 636 head a week ago and 3,320 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs under 100 pounds were selling $2 to $6 lower with instances of $10 lower on 70 pound lambs, over 100 pounds were selling unevenly steady. Demand was moderate to good for this nice offering of long strings of high quality, very attractive lambs in a light flesh condition. Slaughter ewes were selling $2 higher. Feeder lambs made up 97% of the offering, the balance were slaughter ewes and bucks.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled, Choice and Prime 2 to 3, 116 to 123 lbs., 122.00 to 125.00 (124.51). Good 2 to 3, 177 to 199 lbs., 45.00 to 47.00 (46.11).

Slaughter ewes: Utility 1 to 2, 18 head, 159 lbs., 42.00. Cull 1, 14 head, 142 lbs., 31.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 87 head, 68 lbs., 154.00; 176 head, 79 lbs., 145.50; 82 to 88 lbs., 136.50 to 145.00 (142.70); 458 head, 88 lbs., 156.00 ewe lambs; 90 to 96 lbs., 134.00 to 145.00 (142.89); 101 to 102 lbs., 136.50 to 137.50 (136.79); 435 head, 103 lbs., 141.00 fancy; 31 head, 109 lbs., 126.00 fleshy; 33 head, 113 lbs., 124.00 fleshy. Medium and large frame 2, 19 head, 64 to 67 lbs., 140.00 to 147.00 (143.76). Medium frame 1 to 2, 5 head, 49 lbs., 151.00.

Slaughter bucks: Fleshy, 246 lbs., 67.00 per hundredweight.
