Corn up, cotton and wheat down in planting intentions

Producers declared their intentions of planting 5% more corn than in the previous year in the year’s first survey-based acreage report. Surveyed growers said they planned to plant 95.3 million acres of corn.

Growers planned to plant 83.5 million acres of soybeans, down 4% from 2024, and 45.4 million acres of wheat, down 2%. Cotton acres lost popularity as planted acres were down by 12% from the previous year at 9.87 million acres.

Corn and soybean together totaled 178.8 million acres in the March 31 report, up 1.1 million from a year ago. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 40 of the 48 estimating states.

Soybean planted area for 2025 is estimated at 83.5 million acres, down 4% from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is down or unchanged in 23 of the 29 estimating states.

All wheat planted areas for 2025 are estimated at 45.4 million acres, down 2% from 2024. If realized, this represents the second lowest all wheat planted area since records began in 1919. The 2025 winter wheat planted area, at 33.3 million acres, is down 2% from the previous estimate and down less than 1% from last year. Of this total, about 23.6 million acres are hard red winter, 6.09 million acres are soft red winter, and 3.66 million acres are white winter.

Areas expected to be planted to other spring wheat for 2025 are estimated at 10 million acres, down 6% from the 2024 estimate. Of this total, about 9.4 million acres are hard red spring wheat. Durum planted area for 2025 is expected to total 2.02 million acres, down 2% from the previous year.

All cotton planted areas for 2025 were estimated at 9.87 million acres, down 12% from last year. Upland area is estimated at 9.71 million acres, down 12% from 2024. American Pima area is estimated at 157,000 acres, down 24% from 2024.
